Among the things we love are art and getting out of New York City. What better way to do both these things than to visit Dia: Beacon, a mostly naturally lit museum on the banks of the Hudson River? The lovely space—once a Nabisco factory—houses art from the 1960’s onward with special exhibits. But a day trip to this space is more than just about art; it’s about nature and calm. It’s a day of reflection and what better time to do this than in spring when the leaves have just started showing their heads and blossoms are popping up on branches and carpeting the ground? Here’s our mini day-trip guide:
Getting There
You can rent a car or hop on Metro North’s Hudson line train. The ride is one that gives you that “it’s about the journey and not the destination” feeling. Sit by a window and take in the views of the Hudson as the train snakes up by the river. You might spot a sailboat or two or see some birds but otherwise it’s so calm you might end up taking a nap. The trip from Grand Central Station to Beacon will take about an hour and 20 minutes. Once there, you’ll see signs pointing you to Dia, a 10-minute walk.
Eat
It’s not hard to find something delicious nearby. If you’re craving tacos, Tito Santana Taqueria should satisfy. For some fried chicken try the cozy Kitchen Sink, rated on TripAdvisor as the number one restaurant near the museum. The Hop Beacon offers yummy pub food and craft beers.
