Here are a few documents and important things to note that are needed for different items like:

    Household Goods:

    • Passport is a must
    • 3 copies of the detailed inventory
    • Primary Residence or Residence Registration Form
    • Airway Bill
    • Original copy of the power of attorney
    • Certificate of Staying Abroad which is confirmed by the employer

    Note: If a person has been in EU before the import, he might need a permit for the duty-free import of the goods. Within 12 months of the change of residence, the removal goods can be imported duty-free. These goods are prohibited from sale for at least 12 months unless the custom duties are paid.

    Motor Vehicles:

    • Vehicle Papers and Registration
    • Invoice of the same
    • One might need the Form T1, if it is applicable

    Note: For the import of the vehicles, it should have been in the possession of the owner in the origin country for a time period of at least 6 months. If the owner is entering the country on his own vehicle, a Form T1 should be applied for with the Austrian Frontier Customs Office. The move will attract the duty-free shipment.

    The pets could be imported free of any duties and dogs and cats could be imported without any prior authorization. The only thing required for the import of pets is the certificate of vaccination and the veterinary health certificate.

    Restricted / Items attracting duty:

    • Spirits, perfumes, tobacco and cigarette that would be used for personal consumption.
    • Pump guns
    • An official permit is required for the import of firearms
    • New appliance, gadgets or furniture is subject to the import duties
    • A plant protection certificate is required to import the plant and plant products

    The antiques which are over 100 years old are free from duty but would attract Value Added Tax [VAT]. The only prohibited items from import to Austria are drugs. For the consignments, one should contact the destination agent to be sure that all the requirements are met.
